If your mom is anything like mine, she does not like social media and does not care to learn why we use it. Mom thinks that social media is all about women with fake lips shaking their butts to gain followers. Which if we are honest, there is a lot of that on social media.
In my opinion, social media is a lot more than that. You will always have people out there that will do anything for the following. And that’s okay, that’s their own choice on what they want to do and how they want to do it. I think that social media allows everyone to have a voice on a lot wider scale than ever before.
This opens people up to having a horrible attitude and making horrible comments towards others because they are able to hide behind the screen and forget that the person on the other side is also a real person. This obviously cannot be condoned as it is directly linked to childhood depression. We need to do better at being respectful on social media because everyone is entitled to their own opinion and defending your own viewpoint does not need to get personal.
However, aside from this the voice we gain on social media can be very powerful. We are connected to people all around the world. We are able to see social issues and have the power to share information about what is happening in the world. Without social media, would the Black Lives Matter campaign have gotten so widespread world wide? Would people have donated so openly to the australian wildfire campaigns?
No matter what the size of our following is, we have a voice and we have power to share information and issues that we believe need to be shared. We also have the power to connect, to understand, to laugh with people from all walks of life. This is such a unique thing to the generation we are in today. We have such a cool opportunity with social media to lift each other up and learn things around the world that we never would have had access to in another time.
I think social media is a really cool thing. I know why my mom doesn’t like it and thinks its all about posting bikinis and how many likes we get. Which sometimes that’s all it is. But it can be about sharing a message. Sharing information. Learning about other cultures and other places. Learning about anything we can. Making people laugh. Creating entertainment for people. Opening a conversation.
I think social media is unique and can be very powerful one way or another. So we need to use social media in a good way, to spread positivity and to bring attention to injustices and things that are happening in the world.
